Exotic Purple

The first time I remember using purple in a design project was in 2006. My client was buiding a new home. As part of the home's paint color selections, I chose a medium tone muted purple with gray undertones for her little girl's bathroom. The bathroom was all white and gray carerra marble...gorgeous. Then, in 2008, Nancy and I used a smokey lavender for another client's master bedroom walls. We paired it with dark chocolate silk drapery.

Back then, it was a challenge to convince clients to use purple in their decor. This year, purple is everywhere. In recent design projects, we have included touches of smokey sheer gray lavender to the boldest of deep dark periwinkle paired with black. Our design work table right now is covered with fabrics in the most fabulous shades of purple. Some people believe that the color purple represents royalty, luxury, magic, mystery and passion.

La Boheme

Nancy and I are working on a fabulous new design project...blog to follow. The color palette is so soft and zen. We are using shades of green.. moss, pear..green tea with different textures of cream. In design, my mind is always traveling and searching for what we will create next while still working in the design process of what we are creating for a client now.

Last week, while chatting in the Boston Design Center with Timothy McSweegan, designer, writer, artist...he does it all..we swapped our design blogs. Reading Timothy's blog was like being given a ticket to see the movie inside his creative mind...70's and 80's rocker style, chic bohemian luxury, the gypsy, the poet... Please take a minute to check it out, http://www.sacredspacesandpaintedfaces.blogspot.com/

The next day, one of the fashion blogs that I follow, posted a Vogue fashion photoshoot featuring "70's bohemian rock chic". My mind becomes a scanner connecting the dots. I imagine 70's style, like celebrity stylist, Rachel Zoe describes her own signature style, "bronzed, sexy and wrapped up in Seventies-tinged laidback glamour.". Color palettes of violet, amethyst, emerald green, gold and black. Layers of pattern and texture..velvet, fringe, feathers and crystals...

City Girl

Nancy and I are both city girls. Nancy says that the city gave her glamour. Her inspiration came from the colors of broken beer bottles along the curb, the rust on a bridge, graffiti along the train tracks. Growing up, I remember my dear friend, Jeff Henriquez, now an accomplished artist with fine art degrees, started with painting graffiti in the city. Since he was without canvases, he would paint life size art installations on his bedroom walls..what passion and talent! I have included his work below. His artwork is so powerful. I'm in awe when I view his art, remembering hanging out with him as teens and realizing what a god given talent was inside of him even back then.

It also reminds me of Patricia Fields, legendary stylist for Sex and the City. Fields is a master of urban chic. She is a native New Yorker, clearly influenced by the city, both the grit and the glamour. Through her styling of Sex and the City, Fields launched a fashion movement.

As part of our design, we are incorporating our client's logo in a graffiti or tattoo style lettering on one of the walls of FRINGE, the boutique we are designing in Windham, New Hampshire. I love the look of hard edge urban chic set against glamour and finery.
